white people:*force their hair to be matted to form what they think are dreadlocks so they can feel ~one with nature~ and go through some bullshit spiritual hippie phase, probably appropriating other cultures too*
black people:*manage to have their hair lock with ease in order to keep their natural hair maintained but get criticized for it bc it’s seen as unprofessional and dirty*
as a white person, allow me to summarize how white people around me talk about and view cultural appropriation:
"okay, i understand that we kidnapped black people, enslaved them, enslaved their children, raped, tortured, beat, and murdered them, freed them only to keep them in poverty through Jim Crow laws, and continue to subject them to horrific oppression and violence, but they’re asking me not to wear dreadlocks and that’s fucking EXTREME."
You remind yourself of who He is, the Mighty God that created the universe to work together in perfect harmony, and who created you and your loved ones’ from the inside out. You remember His promises, that He will never leave you nor forsake you, and that if the birds in the skies are taken care of and provided for, How much more will He not provide for His sons and daughters? You arm yourself with the Word of God, and you will come to see His steadfast loving character and the way His plans are ALWAYS better than ours. Combine all these things, believe in His goodness and love and let yourself fall in His hands.
“Your mental health comes before school baby, always. If its midnight, and you have an exam the next day but your hands have been shaking for the past hour and a half and you’re not so sure you want to be alive anymore, pull out that carton of Ben and Jerry’s and afterwards, go the fuck to bed. So what if you get a 68% on the exam the next day? You took care of yourself and at the end of the day that will always come before a high test score. To hell with anyone who tells you differently.”—Abbie Nielsen, Dear Future Daughter (via fvckem)
